About

This is a personal website. I came of age in what might be called the golden years of the internet, before anyone was trying to make money off of ads or subscriptions, build a follower base, or “influence” anyone. Most web sites were by individuals, sharing their odd passions, big and small, with the world.

It was also the wild west. You could never be sure what you might stumble upon, and it seemed like every day a friend was pinging me saying “you gotta check this site out…”. We did a lot of stumbling back then.

At the risk of seeing like a curmudgeon (I actually am one, but wouldn’t want to seem that way), I’m actually on board with a lot fo the advances we’ve seen. Building and maintaining websites is worlds easier now, and the pages are much nicer to look at. And if you’ve spent any time here already, it’s clear that I am having a ton of fun with AI-augmented coding.

But I think we lost something special. The internet used to be a place where you could learn something new, cool, different–and sometimes all three. Now it feels like every page I visit exists to sell me something.

This site is my attempt to recapture a little of that spirit. It is also, if I’m being honest, yet another example of building something from scratch instead of just using the perfectly good (but monetized to their death) tools that already exist. There are dozens of platforms that would have made this easier. But “easier” was never really the point.

If you’ve found your way here, welcome. Look around. There’s no paywall and no tracking – though there are a couple projects that are behind logins because of the data they contain.
